New research suggests that a man's fertility can be improved by having regular sex.
Enjoying sex every day for a week can improve the quality of sperm and help would-be parents conceive, a study at Sydney IVF has revealed.
The research studied 118 Australian men with damaged sperm having daily sex for a seven-day period.
Results showed that the genetic quality of sperm was improved substantially without the sperm count suffering.
Dr David Greening of Sydney IVF, a fertility centre in Australia, presented the findings at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam.
He said that following the research all couples struggling to conceive who visit his centre are urged to have more sex to boost their chances of having a child.
Although some of the older men are a little concerned, the younger ones seem to be pleased, Dr Greening explained.
The study suggests that the longer a sperm is inside the body, the more chance it has of becoming damaged.
Bill Ledger, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Sheffield, told the Washington Post that while the results look promising for couples hoping to have children, more evidence is needed to conclusively show that daily sex for men with fertility issues will lead to pregnancy.
