Vigorous Exercise Could Protect Men From Strokes

Light exercise like taking a walk is less likely to reduce the risk of strokes in men compared to more vigorous activities like football, soccer and tennis, a new study has found.

Researchers at Columbia University in New York studied 3,298 people over a nine-year period and found that during the study 238 of the participants, who had an average age of 69 years, suffered a stroke.

The study found that men who regularly performed activities of "moderate-to-heavy" intensity were 63 per cent less likely to suffer a stroke than men who do not exercise at all.

In contrast to some previous studies, the research found no benefits of light exercise activities like bowling or playing golf.

The findings were published in the journal Neurology.Dr Joshua Willey, who lead the study, said: "Taking part in moderate-to-heavy intensity physical activity may be an important factor in preventing stroke.

"A large percentage of the participants were not taking part in any physical activities. This may be true of many elderly people who live in cities. Identifying ways to improve physical activity among these people may be a key goal for public health."
