Men's pearly whites could be more likely to live up to their name, research from Tesco Personal Finance has revealed.

The financial services provider explains that men are more likely to have spent money on dental treatment over the past 12 months.

Just over a quarter (27 per cent) of men have spent nothing on dental hygiene, compared with one in three women.

But men continue to live up to their do-it-yourself stereotype, the study revealed.

Three times as many men as women would attempt to remove a tooth of their own at home in order to avoid the cost of going to the dentist.

Among women, financial concerns are also affecting the speed with which they seek help for dental complaints.

Some 45 per cent of those surveyed revealed that they have avoided visiting their dentist due to concerns about money.

Jeremy Sutton, head of Tesco Dental Insurance, previously noted that the "current economic situation" has brought financial issues to the forefront of many people's minds.

But by investing in some dental insurance, he pointed out that a number of benefits can be achieved.

These range from safeguarding oral health to helping to avoid facing any costly bills for treatment if urgent dental treatment is required.
