However, new research has revealed that frivolous purchases could be leading women to leave more of their footwear unworn for extended periods of time.

Foot comfort centre Eneslow explains that, on average, women have five pairs of shoes sitting idle in the backs of their closets.

Among men, this figure drops to two pairs - while a smaller proportion admit to having any wasted footwear lying around.

Little more than half (55 per cent) of men say they have shoes that they no longer wear taking up space in their homes.

But more than two-thirds (67 per cent) of female respondents to the survey admitted that they hang on to shoes that they do not wear.

Eneslow suggests that poorly fitting shoes could be to blame for why so many pairs are left unworn.

And fewer than one in four (22 per cent) of those surveyed claimed they would be likely to fit new insoles or heel pads to their shoes to make them fit comfortably.

Eneslow adds that, with the average person taking between 7,000 and 10,000 steps per day, feet undergo significant pressure on a daily basis.
