Male Fashion Trends For Spring 2010

Like in the mercurial world of women's fashion, men's styles have an ebb and flow, with things falling out of favor long enough to come full circle and be "ironic" or "retro." Look for some of those cyclical changes to come around in men's fashion trends for Spring 2010.

One such return is the hat. Fedoras, porkpies, newsboy caps and Kangol golf caps all seem to be coming back around, with patterns like checks, skulls or script to embellish them.

The oversize baseball cap with the totally-flat bill is probably still going to stick around for awhile as well. No word yet on the derby or ear-flapped state trooper cap.

Skinny jeans have been favored by a certain segment of young urban hipsters for a couple of years now, and seem to be holding for 2010 (although it's arguable that some hipsters should NOT be wearing that style). If you're not going for the skinny jeans, don't be afraid to buy jeans an inch or two too long and cuff them. The print t-shirts from Aeropastale, American Eagle Outfitters, Ed Hardy and the like are still going to be around, along with the perennial band t-shirts and hip-hop designs. For casual wear, pastel polo shirts are pretty well on the way out, in favor of solid colors like white, tan, khaki, navy, maroon or royal blue. Tennis shoes (not cross-trainers, running shoes or basketball shoes) may be coming back for simple, comfortable utility. The madras-plaid bermuda shorts that unexpectedly showed up last year? Hard to say on those. They seemed to come out of nowhere, and may disappear just as suddenly.

Men's suits will most likely have a somewhat more relaxed fit (the end of the "manorexic" look?), and some details that will evoke the 1940s, like bold pinstripes, checks, houndstooth or even double-breasted jackets and lightly-padded shoulders. Ties? Skinny. Lapels? Mid-shoulder. Three-button suits? Still around. Another sub-trend that harkens back to a previous era is the display handkerchief, in polka-dots, stripes, paisleys or other bold patterns to lend a little panache and flair to either business or casual attire (now let's see how many guys remember how to fold a display handkerchief). Also for 2010, it's time to take those business-casual pants with the pleated front and put 'em back in the closet in favor of flat fronts again (and lighter-brown or black belts). Patent-leather shoes are making a reappearance, although if you wear them you're better off going for muted colors or patterns for your suit (drawing more attention to the shoes themselves).

Urban hip-hop attire is leaning toward denim, with denim jackets and casual pants (not just jeans) in various colors and pre-washed styles. The oversize athletic jerseys, shorts and basketball shoes are still around, with tracksuits and warm up suits for cooler weather.

The verdict? Spring 2010 is not going to be a whole lot different from '09, but look for some subtle changes and some surprising comebacks.
