Sony will launch the hotly anticipated Playstation (PS) 3 Slim video game console in North America during the autumn.

Gamers in the US and Europe will be able to buy the new computer from September 1st.

Although the new PS3 Slim offers the same features as the old model, it has been redesigned to provide a thinner and lighter body while power consumption has also been reduced by two-thirds.

A 45nm version of the cell processor will help the computer be more energy efficient than previous incarnations.

Sony Corporation said that "the compact body and casual appearance" will ensure that the new model appeals to a wider audience.

PS3 users will still be able to watch high-definition Blu-ray discs and download content through the online PS network on the new machine.

The storage size has increased from 80GB to 120GB meaning more digital content such as photos and videos can be stored.

Sony Corporation also announced that the price of its entry level PS3 has been cut by $100 to $299 and its 160GB device has been reduced to $399 for the summer.
