Mystery Touch Tablet to Hail More Success for Apple

Apple reported doubling its profits over Christmas, ahead of tomorrow's launch of its mystery 'iPhone on steroids'.

Apple reported today that its profits doubled over the festive season - a boom expected to continue with the launch of a new eagerly anticipated device.

The computer giant will unveil what is described by a company insider as an 'iPhone on steroids' at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts theater in San Francisco tomorrow morning (January 27th).

Speculation that the device is a tablet computer arose because of Apple founder Steve Jobs' recent admission that creating a market-dominating tablet would be the acme of his career. According to author Leander Kahney, he held meetings at his home to discuss the design of a tablet computer only days after he had a major liver operation.

A tablet combines the functions of a smartphone with a 10-inch screen, which is big enough for gaming, reading and streaming digital media – fulfilling work and leisure and all personal communications needs in one portable device.

It is expected to take the lion's share of the market in a breakthrough year for tablet computers. Earlier in the month, Deloitte predicted that the "'Goldilocks'" devices would finally fill the gap between bulky laptops and smartphones.

Despite the high level of anticipation that has led to supposedly authoritative leaked pictures and endless daily updates on the Apple tablet's progress, its specifications and name and whether it is actually a tablet computer is still unknown.
