Style Guide for Winter Coats for Men

Jan 11, 2010 | Posted by | 0 Comments

How to Pick Flattering Winter Coat

A winter coat for a guy is more than wearing whatever you have in your closet. You have to weigh a number of considerations. Do you live in a place where winters are mild, or are blizzards something you have to live with? Do you have people to impress? Are you likely to gain weight, or will you have this coat for several seasons? Here are some points to consider when selecting a winter coat.

As mentioned, the weather is very important. Wind, rain, and snow can make walking around in a stylish pea coat a nightmare, and make you wish you had selected that warm, down lined parka. Are you going to be experiencing multiple climates, and need a coat that will be both acceptable for going out and wearing on the slopes? If so, consider coats that come with removable liners, as they are designed to work for many climates. If you live in a place where winters are rainy, but not snowy, you should choose an umbrella that will look good with your coat.

How to Choose the Fabric for Winter Coats

The fabric you choose for a coat will have an impact on how warm it keeps you, and what kind of options you have as far as design. The best fabrics are wool and cashmere – these fabrics are expensive, but very stylish, and will keep you warm. Leather looks slick, but won’t keep you warm in low, low temperatures. If you must choose other fabrics, look for one with good insulation.

How to Choose the Best Size

Size is important. Winter coats are sized big because it’s assumed you will be wearing layers over top of them. Pick one size larger than your suit jacket size. If possible, wear typical clothes when you go to try on coats so you have an idea of how it will fit. Shoulder seams should sit just over the edge of your physical shoulder, giving you a great profile. Don’t forget to twist, bend to tie your shoes, sit down, and move while wearing it.

How to Choose the Best Style

Style is always mutating, but thankfully it doesn’t move as quickly when considering men’s coats. Depending on your personal taste, fashion may not be a big consideration for you. Color is important, so pick one that looks good on you. Typically, dark winter colors will be plentiful. If you prefer a light colored coat, consider that you will have to keep it clean. This will be much easier in mild climates as opposed to slushy, rainy ones.

After the season, or if your coat needs a sprucing up, take it to the appropriate cleaner. After winter is over, cover it with a plastic bag on a hanger to protect it from damage during the warmer months. If your coat smells musty after storage, have it cleaned before the season starts.

Knowing what you need ahead of time will make selecting the right coat for you a breeze. Instead of being overwhelmed at the choices, you can walk in, try a few on, and leave with the perfect item with a minimum of shopping time.

Gentleman’s Guide to Looking Sexy For New Years

Tips for Dressing Up For A New Year’s Eve Party

What you wear on New Year’s Eve depends a lot on what you are doing. If you’re having an intimate snuggle on the couch with your girlfriend, you can get away with sweatpants and a blanket. However, if you’re going out, make sure you’re equipped with the most fashionable duds.

There are many types of parties you could be going to. If you’re going to be outside, say, at Times Square, you’ll probably be seen mostly in outerwear. Leather is always a slick and fashionable choice, and looks good on most anyone. Top off your look with a good scarf, shoes, gloves and a hat. Black is the choice color for leather, but brown can look great as long as it’s well matched.

How to Dress for Black Tie Affair

A black tie affair calls for a completely different look. If the party you’re attending requires a tux and you don’t own one, your best bet will be to rent one. The salesperson will match you up with the best look. If you have a date, ensure you have an idea of what they’re wearing, if you intend to go as a matched couple.

Other fancy fashions lend themselves to elegant dinner parties or a trendy restaurant, you can get away with a suit. Charcoal, black, or dark blue are always in style. If you bought a coat off the rack, any reputable seller will be able to tailor it to you. There’s no need to go overboard if you already have a nice suit. Spruce it up with a snazzy dress shirt and tie for splashes of color. Make sure your shoes are shined and you should be good to go.

How to Dress for Less Formal Parties

Less formal parties, or celebrations at a bar should be treated with the same pizzazz. Since it’s probably chilly where you are, you should wear a spiffy jacket – a leather blazer or fashionable pea coat will be perfect for this. Remember, unless you live in a smoke-free town, you will be exposing a dry-clean-only item to an atmosphere full of smoke, and will need to have it cleaned when the festivities have died down.

How to Dress for a Club

For a bar, comfortable attire is acceptable. Also, where you live will influence your dressy fashion. In Texas, dress jeans, boots and a sport coat are acceptable for dressing up. However, you would be laughed at in New York City with attire like that. If you’re unsure about the place you’re going, black dress pants and a button-down shirt will look great. Since it’s party time, don’t feel limited to the white and off-white selections in your wardrobe. Feel free to wear more bold colors, like reds and rich purples. Pastel colors, while popular with the younger crowd for a while, are rapidly falling out of fashion and should be avoided. Remember, once you get to the bar, you probably won’t be wearing your coat much.

Whatever you decide to do for New Year’s Eve, you should make sure you can look great doing it. Follow these tips, practice good manners, and you will be a hit at your celebration.

Male Celebrity Hair Styles 2009

Nov 25, 2009 | Posted by | 0 Comments

Most Popular Celebrity Hair Styles in 2009

1. David Beckham has his hair all figured out. After his great short cut last year, he’s put a bit of a kick into his newest do — he’s got a spiky peak in the front of his hair, which is playful without being over the top.

2. Robert Pattinson is a definite favorite among the younger crowd for his fun, tousled look. He really goes a good bit longer on top, if not on the sides or in the back, which is what allows his hair to get that very rumpled, very casual thing going on.

3. This year Brad Pitt’s hair looks especially classic at many of the big functions, he’s been sporting a very 40s look, sometimes with a bit of a quiff in front, and sometimes, presumably when he’s feeling less serious, gelled up into spikes.

4. George Clooney has a great classic style. It’s shorter on the sides, longer in front, and neatly kept in place, without the look of too much styling product. He really keeps his hair nice and shiny and healthy looking, and that look of healthy, natural hair really goes a long way.

5. Ludacris is sporting an exciting new style. This year he chopped off all of his hair, making it super short, extremely neat and tight to the head. He’s been doing some fun things with his facial hair without getting too incredibly ostentatious.

6. Simon Baker (from the Mentalist) has a somewhat different look. His curly hair is not so much combed as coaxed back into an almost classic look, but not quite tidy enough for that. It really walks the line between formal and casual, which is really nice. After a function, he can take off his suit, and throw on some old running clothes, without feeling like an idiot with his hair all gussied up.

7. David Boreanaz (Bones) has a another great classic look, a bit longer in front than George Clooney’s, but still very flattering, and still hearking back to that 40s-50s style that we’re seeing everywhere this year.

8. Zac Efron (he started out in Highschool Musical) really carries off those side-swept bangs in a way that few can. His hair has just the tiniest bit of a wave to it, so that it ends up looking very casual, yet flattering. And he doesn’t overdo it with gel, the way that so many do, once they get those side-swept bangs. Dirty looking hair just doesn’t look good on anyone, so follow a rule in his playbook and keep that styling product as minimal as you can.

9. Chace Crawford (from Gossip Girl) has a look that the women really like, with long bangs that hang straight down towards his eyes. Not many can carry this look off, but if you’ve got a long forehead, and startlingly attractive eyes, then you may want to consider it.

10. Ashton Kutcher has a great layered look with bangs and sideburns, which has a very hip feel to it, and isn’t too casual.

2009 Winter Fashions for Men

Nov 17, 2009 | Posted by | 0 Comments

Male Winter Fashion 2009

Well, it’s time to put the coolers and the barbecues back in the garage, and all those cold snaps finally means it’s time to put away all those tanks and cargo shorts you’ve been sporting for the summer, too. For some of you, this might conjure up holiday memories of strangling turtlenecks, over sized sweaters, and chaff inducing corduroys. But wait! 2009 winter trends for men have got a little bit of something for everybody. Whether you prefer your jeans skinny or loose, find Adam Lambert a fashion do or don’t, just be sure to stock your closet with a few stifling-free staples.

Dress in Layers to Show Off Your Style

A few of you may know that the winter season can be one of the best seasons to show off your own personal style. All of the bundling and layering grants the freedom to mix and match when you might otherwise keep it simple. If you aren’t sure about your style, all of those layers keeping you warm do double duty in the fashion department.

Winter Woolies & Long Cardigan

One of the hottest trends right now is a basic, foundation building cardigan. Gone are the images of elbow patches and stuffy professor smoking pipes (though it might be a look you’re fond of). The best cardigan can be worn all year round with the right amount of layering. Keep it classy, keep it fresh, keep it comfy.

Don’t Bulk Up With Over Sized Clothes

Maintaining a clean and simple line in your wardrobe is also a must this season. The buck stops here with saggy, baggy, ill fitting shirts and jeans. Trust me when I say your girlfriend will thank you. Instead of turning to that tried and true worn in t-shirt, take a hint from the runway and pair those pressed khakis with a tailored button down or polished polo shirt.

Light Weight Shirts in Layers

Choose to layer a few lightweight shirts together rather than that solitary bulky sweater. You can stay just as warm without sacrificing style. And hey, think about it; pairing together the right shirt and slacks to show off that physique you sweat for eight days a week, can now be rightly appreciated.

Popular Winter 09 Colors

The picture outside your window may be turning that dreary shade of grey, but your clothes shouldn’t follow suit. Get out of the brown and grey habit and find great sweaters in commanding hues of deep indigo, purple, and red.

Accessorize This Winter

Are you thinking about going retro but worried about looking like your dad…or even worse, your granddad? Make a move a la Don Draper and put on a necktie! Accessories are the easiest way to put your personal stamp on an ensemble. Think about finding a great pair a cufflinks, a dress shoe you actually have to tie on rather than slip in, and belts that don’t have a light up message or tons of bling-bling are definitely items to invest in.

Scarves are the Hottest Celebrity Trend This Winter

While you’re at it, take a look at some scarves. A-listers from Jay-Z to Brad Pitt understand how to pair a sleek looking scarf with either a classic suit or dark wash jeans and v-neck sweater. Try going for a longer one in a neutral tone. If you dig the pattern styles, keep in mind a simple one is always best. And remember not to choke yourself with too many twists and knots. Make a casual “I look good but didn’t try too hard” statement with looser draping.

Who Buys Mens Underwear

Nov 12, 2009 | Posted by | 0 Comments

Men Only Buy Their Own Underwear For 17 Years

Men only choose what underwear to buy for a total of 17 years during their lifetime, according to new research.

A study of shoppers at British department store Debenhams found that during childhood and into their teens, men’s underwear is purchased by their mothers.

This is followed by a brief stint of undergarment independence, where men pick their own briefs between the age of 19 and 36, as they search for a female companion.

Responsibility is then shifted onto wives and girlfriends, with few men over the age of 40 ever returning to the underwear department again.

As a result of the study Rob Faucherand at Debenhams said it is easy to tell if a man is still “desperately” trying to impress the woman in his life, by noting the number of underpants he buys.

“If he buys more than 31 pairs every year, he’s either still trying desperately to impress the woman in his life – or else she’s not ‘The One’,” he said.

He added that despite briefs and boxers being the garment worn closest to men’s “masculinity”, even the most “macho” of men allow women to assume the responsibility.

Mr Faucherand said: “I’m sure a Freudian analysis of this trait would give us all a clearer insight into human relationships.”
