The Best Electric Shavers on the Market Today

Shaving is a fact of life and not everyone likes electric shavers. A lot of us still prefer to use Dad's method of shaving cream and a blade because we can't stand the ticklish joy-buzzer sensation. Electrics are an acquired taste, and your beard takes awhile to get used to one. But, if you've got to have an electric, here are some of the best in the game:

• Braun Series 7 - The Braun's foil head moves laterally, which presumably makes the beard stand out a little straighter. Users seem to like this product a lot, saying it delivers a smooth, close, painless shave and has a long-lasting charge. Down sides: It’s noisy, inconvenient cleaning system and its price tag of $235. At that price, you'd better hang onto it for a loooong time.

• Philips Norelco Arcitec 1050x - With rotary heads and a sleek, ergonomic shape, the Norelco is a strong contender. With pivoting rotary heads that can be put under a running faucet for easy cleaning, users give this one high marks. Down sides: an ineffective trimmer attachment and a $150 sticker price.

• Philips Norelco Arcitec 1090x - Similar to the 1050x, the 1090x gets somewhat lower marks for a poorly-designed beard trimmer attachment, but it does have Philips Norelco's reputation for quality.

• Panasonic Vortex HydraCLean ES8109S - The Panasonic can be used wet or dry, meaning it'll work with shaving cream or lotion, or you can just use the thing in the shower if you're in a hurry. The foil head gives a good close shave, and it comes with a five-minute quick-charge feature. Down side: the cleaning process can take several very noisy minutes.

• Panasonic ES8243A Nano - Affordable at $119, this Panasonic is also a wet/dry shaver and gets good reviews for the way it follows contours of the neck, jaw and Adam’s apple. It also features a quick recharge time and isn't too noisy.

• Remington MicroScreen MS2-390 - With a no-frills approach and a hand-fitting shape, the Remington is a great bang for your buck at a low $54.99. It's more of a traditional shaver design for those who prefer to go with what they know. Down side: it's noisy.

• Philips Norelco HS8420 Nivea for Men - This rotary shaver comes with a few bells and whistles, including a dispenser that squirts Nivea for Men Lotion while you're shaving and the ability to use it by the sink or in the shower. Down side: mixed reviews on the lotion dispenser (you might ask yourself if you really need that anyway), and its lack of a beard trimmer.

You might think that an electric shaver is something that can't be improved on, but they continue to evolve just like everything else in the consumer realm. One thing for sure, these are all a far cry from the bulky plug-in electrics your dad used.
