Space Cowboy Sets Sword Swallowing Record
A man known as the Space Cowboy has set a new world record after he swallowed 18 swords at the same time.Chayne Hultgren, 31, broke the previous record – also set by him - at the event held in his native country Australia.
Each sword was two feet and four inches long. The performance artist said on the accomplishment, "I stretch my throat with hoses and use a few different techniques to basically enable me to do what, until now, has been impossible.
"For this feat today I've been training a lot, doing a lot of meditation. I've learned how to control my muscles and my internal organs."
He described the "greatest achievement" of his life so far, as a result of practice from the age of 16.
"I don't just straightaway grab 18 blades and shove them down my throat. You've got to practice a lot and build up to it," Mr Hultgren said.
The fourth annual World Sword Swallower's Day will be held on February 27th, outside Ripley's Believe It or Not museums world-wide, where audiences and passersby can witness the culmination of National Sword Swallowers Disorder Month.
According to Dan Meyer, the president of Sword Swallowers Association International, the month is needed to highlight the contribution of sword swallowers to the history of medicine and their success in continuing a 4000-year old art.
