Men Don't Let Women Sleep

Women are getting less sleep than they need because their partners keep disturbing them, according to a new study.

A Sleep Research Center at the UK's Loughborough University found that women are the most likely to complain about sleeping problems.

They also need to sleep more deeply than men, because they exercise more of the brain functions associated with intelligence, language, memory and consciousness, claims Professor Jim Horne in the UK's Times newspaper.

The famed multi-tasking abilities of women mean they need more deep sleep - 20 minutes more on average - to recover for the next day, whereas men, who are more likely to work sequentially, sleep less deeply for shorter periods of time than women.

One of the main reasons identified for women's night disturbances were snoring and restless husbands and boyfriends.

Research in recent years has shown the same results. Last year, two separate studies found that women who had sleep deprivation suffered a whole host of health problems, which were not experienced by men experiencing similar sleep deficits.

These included hypertension, raised insulin levels and more psychological distress.
