Mercedes Electric eVito Taxi, Classic London Black Cab Goes Electric

The classic London black taxi has gone electric following a redesign from Mercedes-Benz and other engineering specialists.

According to Eco Vehicles, a supplier specializing in green vehicles, the Mercedes Electric eVito Taxi produces zero carbon emissions despite being able to cover 120 miles on a single charge of its Lithium-ion battery.

The vehicles will undergo a test run in London, to see if they can keep up with the capital's traditional black taxis.

However, the new electric versions of the cab already meet environmental criteria for clean air set to be made law by the 2012 London Olympics, by the mayor Boris Johnson.

Co-developed by a consortium of engineering companies including Mercedes Benz UK, Penso and Zytec Automotive, the results of the trial could see a host of commercial vehicles on the city streets adapted with the advanced green technology.

London follows in the wake of New York, whose mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans in 2007 to replace the entire fleet of famously yellow Ford Crown Victoria cabs with hybrid vehicles by 2012.

Drivers have reported that savings have been impressive – many are spending a maximum of $25 a day on fuel – but the cars are more expensive to replace than the old taxis.
