The Most Interesting News Stories in 2009

In the year 2009, there has certainly been no shortage of interesting news stories to speak of.

There were many interesting News stories this year from Tiger Woods infidelity, the banality of Jon and Kate, to the gripping stories of world revolutions, Nobel Peace prizes, and celebrity deaths, 2009 will be a year to remember. What a way to finish up the year!

Tiger Woods- Tiger Woods recently struck a fire hydrant and a tree in his neighborhood, attracting attention from the media. Several windows of the vehicle were broken out, and it was revealed that Tiger was not wearing a safety belt. Although the collision has been ruled an accident, some people are still wondering exactly what led it to happen. Was alcohol a factor? Why are Tiger Woods alleged mistresses coming out of the woodworks?

Balloon Boy – In October of 2009, the parents of a six year old boy claimed that their son had floated away in an experimental balloon that the family made. They attracted attention worldwide, but it turns out that the entire incident was a hoax, and that the boy had been told to hide while the events unfolded. This became clear during a slip on Larry King Live.

Celebrity Deaths – 2009 has been an interesting year for celebrity deaths. Michael Jackson’s death is perhaps the most stunning, as his death revealed a lot more of his life than most fans were previously aware. Pat Hingle, who played Commissioner Gordon in many of the Batman films also passed away in 2009. There were many other surprising celebrity deaths this year, including the death of Ricardo Montalbahn, Billy Mays, John Updike and Farah Fawcett. Another notable death was the death of Jett Travolta, John Travolta’s son, from head trauma following a seizure.

Iranian Revolution - Iran experienced a revolution over the summer of 2009 following protests during the country’s election. It was assumed that voter fraud had taken place, and protesters wanted another candidate to take the presidency. The protests devolved into a serious battle and many Iranians died. Many more journalists are still imprisoned. Most amazing about this story is that Twitter served as the tool for getting out the message.

Closing Guantanamo - Plans are currently being drawn up for the secretive Cuban prison, Guantanamo Bay to be closed. Guantanamo Bay has a trial process that is widely criticized, and so closing the prison down is a big deal for president Obama. The biggest thorny issue has to do with what will happen to the current detainees in the prison once it has been disbanded.

Obama – There are a lot of interesting news stories surrounding Barack Obama, the United States President. Many of the decisions that he is making are perceived to be controversial, and so they are getting a rise of people on every side of the political spectrum. Health care reform, deploying troops to Iraq, closing Guantanamo Bay and more have caused a stir this year. Even more controversial is Obama’s recently Nobel Peace Prize, as the president’s critics are not convinced that he’s deserved it.
