Swiss Road Hog Gets Record Fine
A wealthy sports car enthusiast has been handed a record fine in Switzerland after repeatedly breaking the country’s speed laws.
The driver, who has not been named, was fined $280,000 for driving his red Ferrari Testarossa at 137 km/h.
A speeding restriction in the area where the man was caught meant the owner of the luxury vehicle was driving at 57 km/h over the limit.
The court which set the fine said: “The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed.”
It more than doubles the previous record for a speeding fine in Switzerland, which was issued to the driver of a Porsche following an incident in Zurich in 2008, the BBC reported.
The Ferrari driver’s fine was set high to reflect his wealth, reported to be more than $20 million.
It was also based on the fact that the speed demon was a repeat offender.
