How to Pick a New Year's Resolution & Stick With It

The famed ball drops, and the New Year is here. It never fails, everyone wants to start setting resolutions and planning for change when the New Year arrives. Do you want to get a better paying job, lose that final 15 lbs or begin eating healthy and exercising? Unfortunately, it is all too common for people to set resolutions and then flop pretty badly when it comes to bringing them to fruition. Here is what you need to know about picking resolutions that you can stick to, and then sticking to them better than ever before.

Set a Reasonable Goal

First and foremost, you are going to want to be reasonable when it comes to setting New Year's resolutions. Setting unattainable goals is one of the best ways to make sure that you fail. If you tell yourself that you are going to stop eating your favorite foods for the rest of your life, you're probably going to have trouble succeeding. Tell yourself instead that you will limit it to once a month or only to special occasions, and suddenly that goal becomes much more easily attainable.

Plan Your New Years Resolution in Advance

Next, you are going to want to make sure that you plan in advance. Do not wait until the ball is dropping to decide that you are going to lose 30 lbs during the year. Instead, make a plan ahead of time when it comes to New Year's resolutions. If you plan ahead, then you are much more likely to keep your goals and achieve them.

Make a Game Plan

Formulate a game plan as the next step in the process. The more planning that you do ahead of time, the better you will be able to achieve your goals. Decide how you are going to make your goals come to life and bring your dreams to fruition. Make sure that you have a solid game plan in place long before the New Year and you will be better prepared for success.

The Pros and Cons of Your New Year's Resolutions

Make sure that you weigh all of the pros and cons associated with your goals and resolutions for the New Year. Put things down on paper to get a good feel for why you're setting these goals and whether or not it is a good idea. Keep the list with you all the time so that you can turn to it whenever you are feeling a little overwhelmed.

Be Accountable for Your Resolution

Do not keep your New Year's resolutions a secret. Make sure that you let people know what you are doing and why you are doing it. If they know what you are up to and why, then they can be a source of support when you need it the most. Find a friend with a similar resolution and work together to achieve your goals.

Track Progress and Reward

Finally, track the progress that you make and reward yourself when you are deserving of one. Go see a movie with a friend, enjoy a massage, get a manicure, or do something else that makes you feel special for the hard work that you have accomplished. You deserve it!
