Best Selling Luxury Cars in 2009

So far this year’s best Luxury cars, as we approach the end of 2009; Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes Benz lead the pack by a long shot. This won’t be much of a surprise to industry followers, as where manufacturers are concerned, this is often the case.

Then, a number of players (brands including Cadillac, Infinity, Acura, Lincoln and others) are all about tied for total sales numbers, with Porsche and Saab falling far behind in this market.

One wonders, how did Cadillac fall so far from its well-regarded place in this market?

Small/Less Expensive Luxury Cars

BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Infiniti G

BMW 3-Series is really beating out the competition by a mile here. They dominate this market segment, especially when you add in sales from their 1-Series. Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Infiniti G hardly contend, and the next runners up are far behind:

  • Acura TSX & Acura TL
  • Audi A4
  • Lexus IS
  • Cadillac CTS
    • Larger Luxury Cars

In this segment, the Lexus ES pulls ahead, with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-series neck and neck, just behind. The Lincoln MKS may be doing much better in sales figures than the other competition, but it isn’t really a contender for top dog in this ring.

Large to Almost Limo-Length Luxury Cars

The Cadillac DTS reigns over all here, beating the competition by a long shot. Next up are the Lexus LS, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the Lincoln Town car, all fighting for second position, while the few others in this market lag behind.

      Luxury Coupes (2-Door Cars)

Where this type of luxury car is concerned, the cheaper it is, the better the consumers like it. Chances are, if you bought a luxury coupe this year, you’re driving a Chevrolet Corvette — and a sexy car it is, too. Next up in line was the Volvo C70, with the Porsche Boxter/Cayman not far behind.

As far as the (far) more expensive models are concerned, the Audi A5 rules the coop, followed by the Porsche 911, and then, lagging behind, The BMW 6-Series and The Mercedes Ben SL.

      Luxury SUVs

Due to rising gas prices, SUVs just aren’t selling the way that they used to, even in the luxury market. But despite what some comments may lead you to think, they’re still selling and bringing in money, at least as luxury vehicles.

      Small SUVs

Lexus RX is leading the pack here by a ridiculous percentage. Lincoln MKX and Mercedes-Benz GLK aren’t even close, and the rest of the pack is dramatically behind.

      Medium-Sized SUVs

BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Acura MDX are all bucking for a shot at number one, while Volvo XC90 and Infiniti FX are distant seconds.

      Large SUVs

The Cadillac Escalade has this market cornered. The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is next, though its sales fall far behind.

That about sums up the current state of things, as far as luxury cars are concerned this fall.
