Implant Could Put an End to Viagra

Scientists at a New Carolina university have successfully rebuilt the “stiffening” part of the penis, during research that could bring hope to men suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Implants created from donor cells were given to male rabbits who attempted to mate with female partners within seconds of being introduced, according to the study which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study, conducted at the Wake Forest University, found that the rabbits enjoyed an 83 per cent success rate.

Professor Anthony Atala, who lead the study, said: “Our results are encouraging and suggest that the technology has considerable potential for patients who need penile reconstruction.

“Our hope is that patients with congenital abnormalities, penile cancer, traumatic injury and some cases of erectile dysfunction will benefit from this technology in the future.”

The breakthrough was not the first for Professor Atala’s team who were the first to construct human bladders in a laboratory.

The organs have since been implanted in a number of adults and children.
