The Most Common New Year’s Resolutions, and Why They Fail

Nearly everyone makes a New Year’s resolution. A New Year’s resolution is a commit to do something differently in honor of the new year. Most people’s New Year’s resolutions fail, but they don’t have to. If you understand why most New Year’s resolutions are unsuccessful you will be able to ensure that you avoid those pitfalls and set yourself up for success.

Spend a lot More Time With Your Family

According to polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers and Quicken, over half of Americans usually resolve to spend more time with friends and family.

This a common resolution because most people get so busy during the hectic year that they forget to honor their commitment. Instead of planning to make time to get together with your loved ones, set regular dates that you will spend time together. For example, make the first Friday of every month a dinner date or the third Wednesday of every month a game night. Having an ongoing date will make spending time with your loved ones scheduled so that you can’t possibly forget it.

Exercise More – New Year’s Resolution

Nearly everyone commits to doing more physical fitness. Fitness programs are usually followed for a few weeks and then dwindle down to nothing. This is usually because of poor planning. A fitness routine should be increased gradually. Starting off as a weekend warrior is starting off on the wrong foot. Keep your fitness routine convenient, and start off slow, such as committing to going for a 20 to 30 minute walk each day at work. Many people fail because they try to start an overly strenuous and inconvenient workout routine.

Trying to Lose Weight in the New Year

Over two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Many of these Americans vow each year to lose weight. They often start the year with a new diet and the best of intentions. However, come Valentine’s Day most of those resolutions are nowhere to be seen. This is often because dieters are so eager to lose weight that they go on an overly restrictive and unrealistic diet. Instead of trying something drastic like the cabbage soup diet, try a manageable lifestyle change such as the Weight Watchers plan. Studies show that support and manageable lifestyle changes lead to lasting and healthy weight loss.

Stop Smoking Help in the New Year

Nearly all smokers make a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking at least once. Many fail because they have not truly thought about the lifestyle changes that they will have to make to quit smoking. Smoking is often used a social outlet, especially at the workplace. It is also an activity that keeps many smokers busy in the car. In order to quit smoking you will need support and ideas on how you will be changing your lifestyle to accommodate your New Year’s resolution. Don’t give up if you struggle the first time. Studies show that most smokers attempt to quit smoking an average of four times before they succeed. It is a difficult habit to rid yourself of, but doing so will add many healthy years to your life, so it is definitely worth the hassle.
