Pirate Radio – Full of Laugh-Out-Loud Moments

In a time when rock and roll was looked down upon by the British government, one Pirate Radio ship helped spread the music. Anchored off the coast of Britain in the middle of the North Sea (just beyond British jurisdiction), the station sent out live broadcasts twenty four hours a day.

The villains, government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) and his sidekick Twatt (Jack Davenport), properly named, are hell bent on silencing the radio for good.

They try everything in their power to make new laws and underhandedly overthrow the ship and put it out of commission for good.

The side plot, a coming of age story about Carl (Tom Sturridge) a boy seeking his place in the world, added a great contrast to an ever so funny plot. Carl, sent to live aboard the Rock Ship with his Godfather Quentin (Bill Nighy), becomes a real part of the freewheeling, free-loving Radio Rock gang. Throughout the movie Carl grows into a young man and overcomes some funny moments that young men everywhere must face.

The band of rock DJ misfits are the comic engine of the movie. The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman), and Gavin (Rhys Ifans) make for extremely amusing and interesting characters. The initial animosity between the two is soon overcome over a game of chicken — a sense of respect soon follows.

Filmmaker Richard Curtis (screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill; writer/director of Love Actually) has done a smashing job of recreating this moment in time.

Make-up and Hair Designer, Christine Blundell and Costume Designer, Joanna Johnston, really brought the movie to life. Their exact replications of fashion in the late 60’s gave viewers an inside look of not only how it was during this time but how it looked too.

This must see movie is filled with many great moments where I was forced to bellow my laughter aloud. If you enjoyed “Almost Famous” or “The Doors” you’ll truly enjoy this movie.
