Did Humans Really Evolve From Apes & How Are We Evolving Today?
A theory that a simplified theory of natural selection no longer applies to human beings is false, a new study has revealed.
Researchers from Yale University suggested that humans are evolving at roughly the same rate as other living organisms.
The idea that advances in medicine have reduced human mortality rates and stopped natural selection from applying is incorrect, the study explained.
Scientists analyzed data taken from 2,000 people over a 60-year period to pick out certain trends.
Using this data they were able to make short-term predictions about how the subjects would evolve in the future.
Descendants of the women in the research are predicted to have lower cholesterol, blood pressure, be shorter, slightly heavier and experience the menopause later in life.
Dr Stephen Stearns of Yale University said: “These results place humans in the medium-to-slow end of the range of rates observed for other living things.”
He added that the results show that humans are evolving at an average rate when compared with other organisms.
The results of the study were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.
