Star Wars Soundtrack Tops Best of Poll

The soundtrack to the original Star Wars film has been voted the best science fiction soundtrack of all time in a new poll.

A survey by Total Film saw the John Williams score come out on top, with James Horner’s soundtrack to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan finishing in second place.

Vangelis’ acclaimed music for the sci-fi flick Blade Runner was placed in third while Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture was fourth.

The top five was finished off by Queen’s bombastic score for sci-fi romp Flash Gordon.

Matt McAllister, Total Sci-Fi editor, said: “Most people could identify the movie from just a few bars of the main title music and Williams’ work across all of the Star Wars movies really does create a palpable sense of intergalactic space battles and galaxy-spanning adventures.”

He added that the score is what many movie goers describe as the “definitive sound” of science fiction.

Williams received a number of awards for his work on the music including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award, an Academy Award and a Grammy.
