Michael Jordan is to be finally inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame more than a decade after he revolutionized the sport.
The former Chicago Bulls player, who won six
National Basketball Association (NBA)titles between 1991 and 1998, will attend a special ceremony in the city of Springfield in Massachusetts today (September 11th) to receive the honour.
As well as his sporting prowess, Jordan will also be recognized for helping to usher in the age of big-money sports marketing, having demanded salaries in excess of $30 million and secured brand endorsement contracts worth around $100 million a year.
Phil Jackson, his coach at the Bulls said ahead of the ceremony: “He’s a winner and he’s proven it so many times over and over again.”
Also being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year are David Robinson, who starred alongside Jordan in the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team, and long-time Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.
Over his career, Jordan also won five MVP awards for separate NBA seasons, while he still holds the NBA record for the highest career regular-season scoring average.
