Being surrounded by good-looking females is likely to help with increasing male sex appeal, scientists have claimed.

Researchers working at the University of Stirling asked women to rate the attractiveness of various men from pictures alone.

They found that the female participants deemed those men pictured alongside attractive women to be more attractive themselves, with even having a woman smiling at him was seen to boost a man's appeal.

According to the lead researcher Dr Anthony Little, this phenomenon could be down to evolution, with male animals with more mates generally seen as a more attractive proposition by females.

Speaking at the British Science Festival, he explained: "You get the contrast effect if you stand next to someone of the same sex. If your friend is less attractive, that makes you appear more attractive."

However, this contrast effect can also backfire on men, with being seen with a good-looking member of the same sex likely to make a man appear less attractive.

Earlier this month, the writers of the new book Why Women Want Sex revealed that 84 per cent of women have slept with their partners simply in order to prevent an argument or in exchange for them undertaking a household task.
