Brett Favre is to return to NFL American football for the second time.

The star player, who played 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, originally retired from the sport in 2008.

However, he returned to perform for the New York Jets after being traded last year and is now set to play for the Minnesota Vikings in the new season.

Critics have suggested that the quarterback has turned to the Vikings to get his own back on the Packers after they traded him in but the player was keen to allay those fears.

He said: “This is not about revenge or anything like that, believe me. You can’t take away the 16 years I had in Green Bay.

“They’ve moved on. I’ve moved on. I think it’s great for football.”

Brad Childress, Vikings coach, is thought to have played a key role in persuading Favre to re-emerge from retirement for a second time.

The 39-year-old three-time MVP champion is one of the highest scoring players in the NFL.

Statistics from the NFL show that Favre holds the record for the highest number of touchdown passes, career pass completions and career passing attempts.
