District 9 Debuts at Top of US Box Office

Sci-fi film District 9 has taken the top spot at the US box office after making $37 million during its opening weekend, official figures revealed.
The new movie, which is directed by debutante Neill Blomkamp, knocked action film GI Joe:The Rise of the Cobra from number one.
Last week’s highest-grossing film, which stars Sienna Miller, Christopher Eccleston and Dennis Quaid, made $56.2 million during its opening weekend but has fallen to second after making $22.5 million in its second weekend of release.
District 9 was produced by Peter Jackson, best known for his work on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and follows the chain of events in a South African ghetto after a group of aliens lands.
The Hollywood adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife, which stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in the main roles, made $18.6 million in its debut weekend.
Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep as television chef Julia Child collected $12.4 million, while Disney action caper G-Force completes the top five after taking $6.9 million.
