Playing puzzles such as Sudoku or cards is likely to help reduce the risk or at least delay the onset of dementia, a doctor has claimed.
Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, said that other mental activities including learning a foreign language or filling in crossword puzzles can help reduce the risk of brain disease.
Although better treatment for the ailment needs to be developed, the expert explained that those people who live a healthy lifestyle are less likely to suffer from the illness as they grow older.
“Maintaining a normal weight, low cholesterol and low blood pressure in mid-life” can all help, the doctor added.
A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry showed that smokers who have diabetes or high blood pressure are more susceptible to the disease and people should attempt to modify their behaviour and live a healthier lifestyle.
The research estimated that one in six people over 70 years old in the US suffer from dementia.
Forecasts predict that the number of people with the disease will be three times greater in 2050 than compared with 2000 figures.
