Spotify, the popular online music streaming service, is to be launched in the US before the end of the year, one of its Swedish founders has claimed.

Daniel Eek told Wired that the service is looking to expand across the Atlantic as record labels “want to see Spotify in the US”.

Mr Eek said: “Our hope is to get something up and running before the end of the year.”

He explained that the website currently receives an estimated one thousand emails a week requesting that it head to America, “so we know that there’s a demand for the product”.

Users of Spotify can stream music for free in exchange for listening to a minute of advertising every half an hour.

Premium users are offered a better quality of audio without any adverts in exchange for a monthly fee.

Although Mr Eek confirmed to Wired that the organisation is planning on setting up an office in New York to help secure advertising to fund a free version of the service, no actual date has been discussed for the launch.

Spotify recently added another two million tracks to its library following a business deal with the Independent Online Distribution Alliance.
