US car manufacturer Chrysler has announced it is to continue making its notorious supercar the Dodge Viper, despite original reports suggesting production was coming to an end.

The Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which has manufactured the V10-powered sports car since 1995, was expected to shut its doors in December.

However, plans to sell off the Dodge model have been shelved by the firm as it set up a new partnership with Fiat and initiated a restructuring of its finances.

The notorious Viper SRT10 has a V-10 engine which enables it to reach 60 miles per hour in under four seconds.

Mike Accavitti, president and chief executive officer of the Dodge brand, said that the Dodge Viper has “successfully captured the hearts and imagination of performance enthusiasts around the globe”.

He added that the manufacturer is very proud to be able to continue production of the vehicle, which is an “iconic image leader for the Dodge brand”.

Chrysler added that the vehicle has 600 horsepower, two-toned leather trim seating and Brembo brakes.

The car manufacturer previously announced that in June 2009, the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Association named the Dodge Ram and Dodge Challenger as Truck of the Year and Car of the Year respectively.
