Mny men are reducing their consumption of alcoholic beverages because they want to retain their good looks, it has been revealed.

A survey conducted on behalf of the Know Your Limits campaign finds that the recession is driving trends in drinking habits, as 44 per cent of men hope to save money by consuming less alcoholic drinks.

However, vanity is also ranked highly, with 37 per cent of men reducing their intake of intoxicating drinks due to concerns about their physical appearance.

The threat of a beer belly is one of the main worries, with 27 per cent of men surveyed citing it as a driving force behind them cutting down on their drinking.

Just over a sixth (17 per cent) of respondents are also worried about their chances of developing man boobs due to the calories consumed in beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Overall, 13 per cent believe that their drinking habits are already having an impact on the way they look.

Nine per cent also believe that their performance in the bedroom is taking a hit due to the amount that they drink.

However, less cosmetic complications – such as mouth cancer, throat cancer and stroke – are being overlooked by many men.

The survey reveals that the majority of all men are unaware that drinking alcoholic beverages has been associated with a greater risk of developing those conditions.

Guidance from the Know Your Limits initiative adds that children often imitate their parents – meaning heavy drinkers could find their offspring experience problems with alcohol too.
