Failing to clean gym equipment after use has been identified as one of the biggest faux pas of gym etiquette.
Failing to clean gym equipment after use has been identified as one of the biggest faux pas of gym etiquette, it has been revealed.
In its list of do’s and don’ts of hitting the gym, North by Northwestern cites experts at the Emily Post Institute, who stated that cleaning machines is a must after use.
Not only is this considered the more courteous thing to do, but it also prevents the spread of germs among gym members.
Meanwhile, the list compares fitness etiquette to the “urinal rule”, meaning that, when visiting a gym, people should never use equipment that is directly next to another gym member unless there are no other machines available.
Similarly, men are advised against “emitting foul smells” by ensuring they wear good deodorant, as well as dressing inappropriately, which includes wearing flip-flops, cargo pants and jeans.
Failing to return free weights and talking for extended periods on the phone “is not acceptable”.
Some people are now beginning to abandon the gym in favour of interactive fitness games such as EA Sports Active for the Nintendo Wii, according to news-press.com.
The games, which can include virtual personal trainers, are said to benefit those who feel uncomfortable in a gym setting, yet still encourage calorie burning and muscle toning.
