More people of both sexes are suffering from severe allergic reactions to otherwise harmless things, it has been revealed.

Figures from the Anaphylaxis Campaign show that fresh fruit and vegetables are causing more severe reactions than has historically been the case.

This is particularly likely when the foods are raw, but becomes less of a risk once they are cooked.

Sufferers may also experience less severe allergies such as hayfever.

In light of the growing prevalence of severe allergies, the Anaphylaxis Campaign is encouraging those who suffer from extreme reactions to consult a clinician.

Symptoms in the mouth and throat are identified as being among the most dangerous, as they can make it difficult for an individual to continue breathing.

David Reading, technical director at the Anaphylaxis Campaign, admits that he was “a little bit surprised” when he first saw the growth in severe allergies.

He adds that it is “worrying” to see a greater number of children who are also exhibiting symptoms, as anaphylaxis has previously been primarily an adult problem.

But he also stresses that, for many people, the reaction they experience due to an allergy is unlikely to be life-threatening and could simply manifest itself as a tickly throat or slight sensation of swelling in the mouth.
