Movie producers have been offered a sequel to Sin City, it has been claimed.

Although the Weinstein Co and Dimension say they have the rights to any follow-up to the 2005 noir thriller, the Hollywood Reporter said it looks as though this is not the case and others have been given the chance to buy them.

Indeed, it said bosses in the industry had been informed the film was up for grabs.

Of course, many fans are unlikely to be disappointed at the idea of a second chapter to the Sin City story, given the success of the first.

It told three stories of life in the grim and grisly Basin City, featuring Jessica Alba as an exotic dancer called Nancy Callahan and Rosario Dawson as the dominatrix Gail. Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood also starred.

The stylised black and white visuals in the movie were later used again in The Spirit which - like Sin City - is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller.

He also wrote 300, which was turned into a successful film. It starred Gerard Butler and Rodrigo Santoro as well as Dominic West, who might be recognisable from his five-year turn as The Wire's stubborn detective Jimmy McNulty.
