Cinema company Imax has announced plans to launch hundreds of new screens around the world as it continues to build its reputation as a provider of Hollywood blockbuster films.

The Toronto-based organisation has long been known for its huge screens, which can be up to 76 feet in height, but for many years the technology was only used in museums, wowing crowds with spectacular pictures of nature and space.

However, the organisation has increasingly looked to move into mainstream cinema and in recent years has screened Hollywood blockbusters such as Batman movie The Dark Knight and the new Star Trek film.

Its success in these areas has helped it launch new plans to develop hundreds of new screens, although most are unlikely to be as large as their predecessors, thanks to the increasing focus on digital technology to deliver high-quality screenings.

The new digital screens have caused controversy as some critics have been disappointed that they end up viewing films at Imax cinemas on screens that are close to conventional size, but the company insists the viewing experience is better through their digital technology, regardless of the screen size.

Among the big movies due to be screened at Imax cinemas in the coming months are Ben Stiller comedy Night at the Museum 2 and Michael Bay’s second offering in the Transformers franchise, Revenge of the Fallen.
