Stub it out for the sake of your health, says private care provider Bupa.

According to the organisation, quitting smoking can be “seriously positive” – and the benefits last over an extended period.

Helen Vaughan-Jones, acting senior manager for policy research, explains that the organisation’s recent report on topics such as smoking and alcohol consumption shows clear benefits in the long term for those who are prepared to make a change.

These benefits may be strongest in those people who adopt a number of positive changes to their lifestyle.

For instance, she identifies a positive impact for those who quit smoking, eat more healthily and also address their alcohol consumption.

Ms Vaughan-Jones’ recommendations may be of particular interest for Britons who are keen to make changes to their lifestyle for the sake of their health in later life.

She identifies an increased risk of chronic conditions such as obesity for people who do not make the changes and continue to overeat, smoke and drink to excess.

In the report, entitled Healthy Work, Bupa forecasts a rise of 11 per cent in the number of people who suffer from heart disease by 2030.

This rise in the prevalence of chronic conditions is listed as a note of caution to businesses.

Bupa explains that more employers may need to address the health of their workforce in order to avoid obstacles to productivity due to deteriorating physical fitness in the coming decades.
