Are Men the “Weaker Sex”

Men may not want to admit it, but women are born stronger than them.

That is the discovery of recent research conducted at Tel Aviv University, which looked at newborn babies of both sexes to see who is stronger at birth.

And the differences were apparent even before babies were born, according to Professor Marek Glezerman, chair of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.

The university explains that most of the members of its faculty conduct research either with associated hospitals or institutions elsewhere in the world.

Professor Glezerman points out in his study that male foetuses are more vulnerable while still inside their mothers' wombs.

After birth, the trend continues, with men less able to recover from infections and more likely to die at an early age than their female counterparts.

But he stresses that the discoveries are based only on general trends - and that individual cases could differ.

Perhaps strangely, he also argues the case for men to be placed at risk even at an early age.

Due to peer pressure, Professor Glezerman claims, boys could be more likely to take risks while trying to prove their strength.

And this can prepare them for risky occupations that benefit their community as an adult - such as becoming fire-fighters.
